This is what many of you saw in your mailboxes this week. It’s our exciting new series on the Heroes of the Bible. Don’t forget to tell your friends about these terrific messages we will be hearing in the next 6 weeks. You won’t want to miss them either.

Also, we are working on a Sunday night series of Children’s Church messages on heroes. I think the kids are going to love it. More details later.

Don’t forget to pray for Brenda as she recuperates from her tests today. Thankfully, everything is ok and she can be treated with medication.
Please pray for Bertha Thompson who fell this week and broke her hip. She is in the hospital now recovering from surgery.

Friday night at 7:00 is music practice. Hope to see you all there and hope you have a great weekend.

Sunday, May 27

Filed under: Sunday Review — Phyllis Rice @ 5:33 am

I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday weekend. Our trip to the Cascades was great. What a beautiful place. Bob and Jeanne were our “tour Guides’ for the trip and they did a great job. Even if Brenda did accuse Bob of trying to “kill her”. To see pictures go here

We want to go ahead and let you know about the VBS for this Summer. The dates will be July 15-19. We will be having the Ramseys come this year to do our Bible School for us. We would like to be able to provide food for them while they are here. So, we are asking everyone to pick up a gift card the next time you are out to eat. They like Bob Evans, Ryans, and Cracker Barrel. If you get one, just drop it into the offering plate in the next few weeks and we willl know what it is for. Any that are left will be used for missionaries, and visiting preachers that come by.

Sunday we celebrated those who served in our military. Especially those who gave their lives. Thanks to all who made this wonderful service possible.

What a privilege to be able to work with such a wonderful group of people. We are so thankful to all of you who do a part. That’s what makes everything work together smoothly.

I hope you all have a great week and don’t forget to check in everyday for something new. We love it when you comment so let’s hear from you this week.

A Slow Blogging Week

Filed under: Reminders — Phyllis Rice @ 6:10 am

Hello Everyone. I hope you are all having a great week. We’ve been a little slack on the blogging this week. Hopefully we will get back on schedule next week.

Just a quick reminder that tonight is music practice for anyone who can come. We did not have choir practice Sunday night so we will go over it tonight.

Also to the ladies, we will be studying the third chapter of Esther in Sunday school. Do your best to be there. We are having such a wonderful time in this class. If you don’t already come, feel free to start this Sunday. We would love to have you all.

Be sure to go over to Charley’s blog today too. He has a new post you’ll want to read I’m sure. Also, I hope to have a few new pictures on the church photos link today so check that too.

I pray you all have a wonderful holiday weekend and we look forward to seeing you tonight or Sunday.

We again had a wonderful time together this Sunday. We heard a great message called “It’s Different Now”, with the song to go with it. Again the choir did a nice job on their song.
The highlight of the day however was the special singing by the Dibler family. They did a wonderful job on the music Sunday night. We would love to have them back again soon.
We pray everyone has a great week and don’t forget to leave your comments. We love to hear what you have to say.

A Lasagna Story

Filed under: Ladies, Reminders, Uncategorized — Phyllis Rice @ 7:15 am

This next week we are having Charley’s cousin Mark and his family come and visit with us on their way up to Indiana. I am going to once again make lasagna. Now the reason I choose lasagna a lot of the time is because I want to spend more time with my company and not all my time in the kitchen. Well, I had this same idea a couple of weeks ago when Nathan Meredith and the Justice family came for the weekend. So, Friday before they came I put the lasagna together so all I would have to do is take it out of the fridge and put it in the oven. Then I got this idea. Why not put it in the oven while we are gone (about 3 hours) on warm. Then when we get back all we have to do is turn on the broiler and brown the cheese on top. OK, so most of you are already saying “you didn’t”. But yes, I did. I came home took it out of the oven and it was a very strange golden brown color and dry, dry, dry. Of course, everyone said it was fine, but I didn’t see anyone go back for seconds. Later James did admit it was pretty bad. But then followed up by saying “but usually your lasagna is really good”.

Sunday Brenda made us lasagna and reminded us of how good it could be, if you just cook it right. Anyway, moral of the story is… You cannot slow cook lasagna!

Also, music practice will be tonight at 7:00.

Sunday night we will have a special musical treat. Charley’s cousin Mark Dibler and his family will be here to sing for us. You really do not want to miss this. They are are very talented group. Try your best to be back on Sunday night and invite someone who loves good singing.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and hope to see you Sunday.

They Look Weird

Filed under: Uncategorized — chasrice @ 9:20 am

One of the recurring conversations at our house is about reaching the younger generation—this generation. We debate how to do this, what legitimate means we can employ to accomplish this, how much money should the church spend to do this, how much energy I (the pastor) should spend in this direction, etc.

Central to the debate is the question about being true to the Bible. Some Christian leaders are very concerned about using worldly means to accomplish a godly end. They are critical of Christian leaders who are not dressed (or look) like “Christians.” You know—the earring thing (or nose, or lip, etc.)! Or the weird hair-color thing! Or the casual (extreme) attire!

They believe Christians should look different from the world. They say it’s OK to reach out to the young people for salvation, but once they are saved, they should change their appearance to look like “Christians.” It’s a “testimony” thing!

And I understand this: I want my daughter to look like a beautiful lady! I do not want her to have “hot-pink” hair spiked into a point. I don’t want rings sticking on every part of her face! And I want the same things for my sons.

BUT, I argue the real question is NOT “what do I want?” The real question is NOT “what do I think about this subject?”

The real question IS “WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT THIS SUBJECT?”

I have heard many preachers, pastors, and Christians say, “I do not believe it is right to dress that way or look that way.” But then I ask the simple question, “where in the Bible do you get that ‘belief’?” The inevitable answer is the Bible says, “come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord,” (2 Cor. 6:14). Or some similar passage.

I know the O.T. Jews were commanded to look a certain way! But God specifically addressed the question in regards to Gentiles (Acts 15). We are told that we DO NOT have to become Jews. There is NO outward “look” given to the Gentiles! There is NOT a certain “worldly look” that is BIBLICALLY UNGODLY (apart from apparel that is “immodest”)!  And 2 Corinthians 6:14 is not talking about a weird hair style or weird piercing or weird clothes! It is talking about separation from sin!

Now, I know we could make a good argument that your appearance makes a statement about what you believe (demonic statements, drug statements, sex, etc.), but most young people will tell you they are not trying to make an unbiblical statement. They are just being unique, being themselves, etc. If what they are wearing does not state something sinful, why is it wrong? If they are just saying “I am unique,” “I am ME,” why do Christians judge them for the way they look? Why are they not welcomed with open arms into our churches today? And if they do come into our churches, why are they not allowed to get involved in our churches without first changing their appearance?

If you tell me that you “believe” their weird look is wrong, I tell you that you should rather say, “I think it is wrong.” Your “belief” is not based on what the Bible says, but on what you think the Bible means by what it says in 2 Corinthians 6:14 or some similar passage.

I am passionate about this today because Phyllis and I walk around Athens and see a harvest that is ripe, young adults who need the Savior! Do I have to tell them to change their individuality if they give their lives to Jesus? And if I do, where do I take them in the Bible to prove that “biblical standard”?

Well I know the debate will continue! But I wish God’s people would just be honest with themselves, their children, and this generation. Be honest! Admit it! You just don’t like the way this new generation looks! THEY LOOK WEIRD! But stop trying to justify your opinion with poor biblical exegesis.

What a great Mother’s Day service we had yesterday. It is so great to see how close some of you ladies are to your children. It was a good reminder of how important it is for us to take our job as mother very seriously. Even if our children are grown.

The pictures are ready so just click on the church photos link to the right of this page and it will take you to the Mother’s Day pictures. As always, we want to hear your comments on the service, the pictures, or anything you like. I hope everyone has a great week.

Motherhood

Filed under: Ladies — Phyllis Rice @ 4:23 am

At this time of year, we celebrate motherhood. We honor our Moms for all that they have meant to us, what they have taught us, and the person we have become as a result of their example. I want to take just a minute to say that it is a privilege to be a mom. And not just any old mom but the mother of 3 very special children. If I could have searched the world over and chosen any 3 children, I would have chosen Nathan, James and Julia. Just so they know they are so very special to me and I am so proud of the people they have become.

So here’s your chance. Do you want to brag on your kids? Tell us what’s special to you about being a mother.

Change?

Filed under: Ladies — Phyllis Rice @ 4:14 am

You know ladies I was thinking this morning about how God brought us to this place and how, if it had been up to me, I probably never would have moved from the very comfortable spot I was in. But through a series of circumstances, he made it clear to me that I should. But still it took Him actually moving me. My son made the statement to me that he needed God to light a fire under his rear to make him move. So did I. Thank God he did. I hate to think of the blessings I would have missed out on if I had not followed his leading to this place. Now I know we tend to get real comfortable in the place we are in. It could be a home, a job, a group of friends or even our family. But there is no better place to be than right where God wants us even if it means a big change for us. Some thing totally different than what we have been used to. We need to be willing to see the signs when god shows them to us. Don’t make God have to light a fire under our rear before we see it.
